It's time to talk about fat - and how we manage it to stay healthy

There’s new information all the time about diet and weight and fitness.

But basically, as you doubtless know, if we’re overweight it’s generally because the energy we consume in the form of food is more than the energy we’re using up.

Now, many of us are unsure about which foods are healthy and which are not. Advice changes all the time, doesn’t it?

But it might help if we take on board that consuming too much fat of any kind is likely to lead to weight gain, and – most importantly – that all the sugars and carbohydrates we eat which are surplus to our energy requirements, also convert into fat in the body and pile on the pounds.

Let’s start with the fats themselves.

It’s a confusing story to be honest. For years we were told that all saturated fat was bad.

But that led to a rise in low fat products which were often packed with ingredients now widely regarded as more harmful or unwise than eating the full fat versions.

Indeed, numerous studies have found that whole fat dairy is better for you than the lower fat options.

Why? Because it keeps us satisfied for longer. Researchers also........
