Endangered eels will get special protection during work on flagship reserve

The conservation charity has been given the go-ahead to install a new sluice valve to help control tidal flow and prevent erosion of the seawall which protects freshwater habitats at Titchwell Marsh.

New islands, channels and pools will also be created on the site off the A149 near Hunstanton.

The RSPB's senior sites manager for north west Norfolk, Hayley Roan, says European eels are present in tidal watercourses on the reserve.

The snake-like fish are in serious decline, with numbers falling by 90pc since the 1980s,........
