Pub which opened convenience store without planning permission gets to keep it

Ashley Sayers has been granted retrospective consent to convert the games room at the Bentinck Arms in King's Lynn.

People living near the pub, which stands at the corner of Loke Road and Cresswell Street supported the bid.

One posted on West Norfolk Council's planning portal: "As the cost of living is hugely going up week by week this shop supports so many families like myself who find ourselves in financial difficulty because the supermarkets charge so much."

Another added: "This is good use of the space for a community shop that helps people who are struggling with the cost of living."

An objection was also received, which said people parking on double yellow lines obstructed passing traffic.

A planning officer's report said: "The use is not alien within this locality given the range of local convenience shops, hot food takeaways and chemist nearby."

It added it would enable the pub to diversify and providing a low-cost shop would benefit the community.
