On September 12, 2001, America woke into that quiet. 

The sky was still blue and empty of planes. 

Flags appeared on porches that had never flown them. 

Strangers looked one another in the eye and did not look away. 

For a brief, luminous stretch of time, we were not red states or blue states, not parties or factions. 

We were simply us.

That fall the leaves still turned, but the palette of the season shifted. 

Instead of the usual red, orange, and yellow, the country dressed itself in red, white, and blue. 

Bunting hung from firehouses and school fences. 

Ribbons tied around trees.
