RELIEF FOR VICTIMS: The purpose of having a legal system is to ensure fair trial and impartiality for all concerned so that the dispensation of justice may end up punishing the wrongdoer, provide relief to the victim, and to dis- courage the criminal elements in society. But in cases of harassment, if we want to save the victim from prolonged, expen- sive litigation, mental agony, cross-examination and the burden to provide evidence, courts and police are playing a role they are not supposed to play.

AGRI MONITORING: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has recently recommended that Pakistan should develop an agri monitoring system in order to monitor flood-affected areas and the agriculture sector at large. The damages the people and the agriculture sector suffered during the floods last year have adversely affected the community of farmers, and there might be a wheat crisis in store.

STOLEN GOODS: There are several places in Karachi where one can find stolen items for sale. These places are called ‘Chor Bazaars’. These places cannot be run without the support of area police. The authorities should shut down all illegal bazaars as soon as possible. It would be an effective step in controlling the menace of robbery and looting in the city.

HEALTH CRISIS: The recent floods hit the already inadequate health system rather badly, leaving it good for nothing. International agencies have already declared that a number of temporary shelters housing the displaced families need immediate lifesaving support. The Basic Health Units are mostly dysfunctional in Sindh’s rural and semi-urban areas that bore the brunt of the natural calamity. People living in far-flung areas are receiving no help from the government when what is needed is urgent attention.
