Explainer: Is India Becoming a Sponsor of International Terrorism?
Over the past few years, India has faced growing criticism from around the world. A difficult question is being asked more often: is India moving beyond normal security measures and starting to act like a state that supports or carries out violence beyond its borders?
The Indian government strongly denies this. Officials say the accusations are unfair, politically driven, or based on false information spread by hostile countries and separatist groups. Still, a series of serious incidents in Australia, Canada, the United States, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have kept these concerns alive especially under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tough approach to security and foreign policy.
The Bondi Beach Attack in Australia
On December 14, 2025, a deadly shooting took place at Bondi Beach in Sydney during a Hanukkah celebration. Fifteen people were killed and many others were injured. Australian authorities described it as a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State (ISIS) ideology.
The attackers were a father and son: Sajid Akram, who had moved from Hyderabad, India, to Australia in the late 1990s, and his son Naveed Akram, who was born in Australia. Investigators said Sajid had contact with family in India.
In the immediate aftermath, false claims spread on social media, particularly linking the attack to Pakistan or foreign intelligence agencies. Australian officials quickly dismissed these rumors.
Killings Plots in Canada
Some of the most serious allegations against India come from North America.
