More needs to be done to support ambulance workers

The pressures Scottish ambulance workers experience on a daily basis are laid bare in today’s Daily Record.

More than half of all paramedics and technicians say they have seen patients die or deteriorate because of delays.

The survey also reveals that some members of staff have worked more than 20 hours in one shift and most regularly do 12-hour-plus shifts.

To make matters worse, many workers suffer physical and verbal abuse.

It beggars belief that such vital ­frontline staff should have to deal with so much stress when they are often saving lives.

It is a tribute to their dedication and professionalism that there is not a mass exodus.

But the Unite union survey shows a workforce at physical and emotional breaking point.

The union’s call for more recruitment and training for its members must be listened to by the Scottish........
