Opinion: NY must pass Prop 1. We have to protect reproductive freedoms
Twice in the past five years, I have undergone a D&E surgery; the first was a termination for medical reasons (TFMR) and the second was following a missed miscarriage (MMC). Two different circumstances that called for the same medical treatment: abortion care.
I’ve learned first-hand that life and pregnancy are infinitely complex and unpredictable. I want women across New York to be free to make decisions about their own bodies, families, and futures, and to be guaranteed access to vital medical care — which is why I'm proud to support Prop 1, to permanently enshrine the right to abortion in our state's constitution.
In 2019 I was pregnant with my first child. At my 20-week anatomy scan the doctor discovered severe brain abnormalities. No one could say for certain how her life would begin — or even if it would begin — but they were clear that there would be many, many challenges for our beloved little girl. Terrified that she would be born into a broken body that isolated her, or even worse, caused her endless pain, my husband and I made the difficult choice to end her life. Our first choice as parents was to get an abortion. It was not a choice we wanted to face. But every day. I’m grateful........
