Snapchat introduces new tool to help young people run for local and state office

Continuing a trend of increased political participation since the midterm elections in 2018, millennial and Gen Z voters made history in the 2020 elections by setting a record high for voting rates. Many attributed the increase in voter turnout to social media and online activism.

Now the same popular social media apps, such as Snapchat, which encouraged young people to register and vote last year, are encouraging youth to run for office. Snap, the company behind the Snapchat app, launched an initiative Tuesday intended to help connect users with information, tools, and connections if they want to launch their own campaigns and run for office.

Snapchat is commonly used by millennials and Gen Z. According to Snapchat's parent company, the app has a wide reach among young users, reaching about 90% of people in the U.S. between the ages of 13 and 24.

To guide individuals who have aspirations to learn how to run in local elections, the app released a tool called “Run for Office” that will help eligible users find local races. The tool will not only walk users through what they need to do to become candidates but help guide them to nominate friends for particular offices.
