Rural NY hospital pauses maternity services after six workers refuse vaccination

As establishments in different sectors adapt vaccine mandates, resistance persists. Despite the fact that the delta variant is disproportionately impacting unvaccinated individuals more and that more than 90% of all COVID-19 hospitalizations are of the unvaccinated, some people refuse to get the vaccine. In some cases individuals would rather leave their jobs than get vaccinated—amid shortages in health care this has resulted in extreme measures.

After at least six employees in the maternity ward resigned, a hospital in upstate New York is forced to temporarily stop delivering babies later this month. "We are unable to safely staff the service after 24 September,” Gerald Cayer, chief executive of the Lewis County Health System, told reporters at a news conference. “The number of resignations received leaves us no choice but to pause delivering babies at Lewis County General Hospital.”
