‘Nothing prepares you for this’: Teachers across U.S. quit in record numbers during pandemic

1 0 0

Similar to nurses nationwide who are quitting in record numbers, teachers across the country are quitting their profession. COVID-19 outbreaks in states without mask mandates and violence inflicted by parents and others refusing to allow their children to wear masks have resulted in teachers either resigning or retiring. This not only exacerbates a teacher shortage that existed prior to the pandemic, but creates more stress for the teachers who are left.

“Teaching during the pandemic has been the most difficult thing I have had to do in my 30-year teaching career. Nothing prepares you for this. We had no plan for this and now the plan keeps changing,” Cathy Bullington, an elementary school art teacher in Bedford, Indiana, told The Guardian.

Bullington noted she is preparing to retire early due to the difficulty of teaching at this time and being left out of the decision-making processes that include addressing problems that have been exacerbated by the pandemic. “Teachers are leaving because they are exhausted, stressed and underpaid. We have had a lot more demands put on us.”

More than 200,000 weekly cases of COVID-19 have been reported among children in the past five consecutive weeks.........
