Last January, Donald Trump entered his second term with the support of a Republican congressional majority that stood ready to help him enact his all-encompassing, controversial agenda. But with midterms on the horizon, the president has appeared increasingly worried about his party’s chances to maintain control of the House and Senate.

In a Reuters interview on Wednesday, Trump noted the common trend of the governing party losing seats in Congress. But though Trump insisted the Republican Party is “going to try very hard to win the midterms,” he soon took things a step further, suggesting his successes in office should eliminate the need for elections.
