Why Hasn’t Platner Dropped Out Yet? Live Updates
Maine oyster farmer Graham Platner’s insurgent campaign to defeat Republican incumbent Susan Collins is now on death watch after credible allegations of sexual assault surfaced against him, prompting a rapid mass exodus of his endorsers and supporters. Though Platner denies the allegations, he initially signaled in a video statement that he’s considering his options. Now, days have passed since the article’s publication and Platner remains in the race. Below are the latest updates on the state of Platner’s campaign and what might happen in Maine’s Senate race without him.
Knives out for Morris Katz, cont’d
David Freedlander reported last month on “schadenfreude” among political operatives as wunderkind strategist Morris Katz came under scrutiny amid unflattering coverage of Graham Platner’s alleged personal behavior — yet well before the sexual assault claim this week that has torpedoed his insurgent candidacy. “The knives are out for him,” one said then of Katz, a key figure in Zohran Mamdani’s rise.
Now as Platner’s candidacy hangs by a thread, Axios reports that “many Democrats blame Platner’s team — particularly his political advisers at the media consulting firm Fight Agency — for not revealing or pushing to find out the extent of his baggage while continuing to rake in money over the past year.” (Katz is a member of the Fight team, along with another central Mamdani figure, Rebecca Katz; the two operatives are not related.)
As Platner’s candidacy got underway in August 2025, senior Washington Democrats questioned people at Fight “about rumors of skeletons that could become liabilities, including issues in Platner’s former relationships with women,” and “Fight Agency representatives assured them all was well,” according to Axios.
A spokesperson for Fight — which made Platner’s launch video and more than 40 ads — responded to the outlet, “A vast variety of rumors swirled throughout the entirety of the campaign. We took those rumors seriously. The first time we heard any allegation that extended beyond problematic posting and infidelity was when the New York Times reached out. The first time we heard a specific allegation of non-consensual behavior was in the days prior to the Politico story breaking.”
Morris Katz was spotted today at Platner’s home as the candidate is expected to exit the race.
Platner campaign manager says their team has been cut out of nomination process
The Platner campaign furthered its dispute with the Maine Democratic Party Wednesday afternoon, accusing the party of allowing establishment figures to have a say in the nomination process.
In a message to staff, Platner campaign manager Ben Chin said the party “allowed the DC-based Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to send staffers to plan a potential nominating process behind closed doors.”
“Both the state and national parties cut our team, our volunteers, and our vast networks of supporters out of the conversation completely,” he wrote.
Punchbowl News has a look at Chin’s campaign missive:

The message calls on volunteers and supporters to complete a survey and provide their feedback in the next 48 hours, saying their responses will be sent to the Maine Democratic Party. Semafor shared an image of the survey:

We might be hearing from Platner soon
Reporters at Axios and Puck report that the beleaguered candidate told staff that he will be speaking later today:

Cain says she’s not joining the race
Despite earlier reports, the former state legislator says she will not pursue the Senate nomination:
I love Maine. I believe in public service. And it has been great to hear from friends and former colleagues encouraging me, but I am not running for the U.S. Senate this year. My focus is, and has been, electing Hannah Pingree as Maine's next Governor.— Emily Cain (@emilyanncain) July 8, 2026

Could Platner ties haunt a future nominee?
NOTUS examined the idea that a new Senate nominee’s chances could be hurt if they’re seen as being too close to Platner:
Platner has denied the allegations of sexual assault and misconduct from former girlfriends that have ratcheted up pressure on him to drop his bid for the seat. Still, Democrats who anticipate he will be forced to end his run told NOTUS their party has a unique challenge: Democrats need a replacement candidate who is distant enough from Platner to avoid his toxicity, but not so far from his politics that they would undermine the Democratic primary voters who nominated Platner.Given that this is playing out in one of the most competitive Senate contests in the country, any ties to Platner could become an issue for a potential alternative candidate — and the rest of the Democratic Party, they said.“If someone has come out there and really defended him up till this point, I could see those words coming back to haunt them,” said a former state party official. “If they defended him very publicly at other points during the emergence of some of his controversies, that type of stuff probably will have a bit of a legacy, because the other side will make sure that those types of quotes don’t go away.”

Geiger reacts to latest Platner scandal
Valli Geiger, a Maine state representative whose name has been floated as a potential candidate for the Senate nomination, weighed in on the controversy in a social-media post on Tuesday. Geiger, a strong supporter of Platner through his numerous scandals, struck a more nuanced tone in her response, noting how hard this entire situation has been for Maine.
“I will not throw Graham under the bus, but neither will I slander or accuse Ms. Racicot of anything more than telling the truth as she experienced it. I acknowledge the pain on all sides and offer compassion on all sides. Emotions are high, some are in deep pain, some have a sense of immense betrayal, some are livid, some are gleeful with ‘I told you so’s’. But there are no winners here, something profoundly hopeful has been lost,” she said on Facebook.
Geiger offered thanks to both Platner and his wife and signaled it was time to look forward. “Now it is our job to ensure that the movement continues to burn brighter, fiercer and to do nothing less than save our country,” she said.
Another name in the mix?
The American Prospect reports that Emily Cain, a former Maine state senator and onetime executive director of EMILYs List, is expected to seek the Democratic Party nomination for Senate.
Wasserman says Dems still have a shot in Maine
CNN’s Erin Burnett asked Dave Wasserman, the senior editor and elections analyst for the Cook Political Report, if Democrats still had a potential path to victory in Maine.
“Yes, they very much do because Donald Trump’s approval rating in the state is still in the mid-thirties and she’s a Republican running for reelection,” he said.

Wasserman also talked about the likelihood that state senator Troy Jackson is the next nominee, pointing to his support from Senator Bernie Sanders, who was a key surrogate for Platner.
“No matter the severity of the allegations against Graham Platner and no matter who Democrats nominate, there’s always going to be a faction of Platner supporters who believe that D.C. Establishment Democrats pushed him out of the race and so that makes it difficult to unite the party into battle against Collins,” Wasserman said. “But Jackson represents, probably, Democrats’ best chance given that some of the other people in the mix could be portrayed as having shallower roots in Maine whereas Jackson is a logger from Allagash even if he’s not as charismatic a candidate as Platner has been.”
The end (might) be near
CNN reports that the Platner Senate saga might be nearing an end:
Graham Platner and a small team of strategists behind his candidacy are trying to navigate an exit from the consequential Senate race in Maine without entirely squandering the movement he built, people familiar with the matter said, rather than digging in or trying to find a path forward for his candidacy. He is expected to announce his decision through a recorded video, which could come later today. As of this morning, the message had not been taped, the people familiar said.

The Wall Street Journal lays out what the crisis in the Maine Senate race could mean for Democrats’ path to controlling the chamber:
Maine is crucial to Democrats’ chances of retaking the Senate, as it is one of their best opportunities to flip a Republican-held Senate seat. Incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, who has been in office for almost 30 years, is the only Republican in the Senate representing a state that former Vice President Kamala Harris won in the 2024 election. If Democrats lose Maine, their path to the majority is far more difficult. They would have to win several states normally considered solidly Republican such as Texas, Ohio and Iowa. This week, the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm is set to host major donors for a previously scheduled retreat in Colorado, according to people familiar with the event. Platner’s scandal and what is next for the party’s strategy will most certainly be high on donors’ minds.
