A Guide to Trump’s Reflecting Pool Enemies, Real or Imagined
Not that long ago, “reflecting pool” just meant reflecting pool. Now, thanks to President Trump, it’s quickly become synonymous with terms like “debacle,” “fiasco,” and “hilarious never-ending shit show.” Who’s to blame for this epic ongoing green and American Flag Blue mess? Definitely not Donald Trump or his administration, according to Donald Trump and his administration. Below is a guide to who or what they can blame, and in some cases already have.
. Peeled American Flag Blue
Soon after the Trump administration deemed its multimillion dollar renovation of the reflecting pool complete, observers noticed pieces of the pool’s Trump-approved “American Flag Blue” colored coating were beginning to peel away. So much for those no-bid contracts!
Experts say the new darker color Trump chose for coating the bottom of the reflecting pool may also be making the water warmer and thus more susceptible to algae growth. And if you visit the reflecting pool and see a piece of peel, don’t touch it or you might end up facing federal charges.
The American Flag Blue coating is a triple threat.
On June 19, as the pool problems became increasingly undeniable, Trump said in a Truth Social post that “we’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool,” alleging that vandals had “destroyed the grass outside of the Pool” and “done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” He has since also called them criminals and thugs, and he’s made a number of unsubstantiated specific allegations about their destructive efforts.
. Fertilizer saboteurs
Trump has claimed the algae blooms were a result of sabotage, suggesting that fertilizer was dumped into the reflecting pool. “If you put fertilizer in the water, you get algae. Somebody said they might’ve put fertilizer. They did something to create the algae,” the president told reporters Monday.
. Pool bottom slashers
Trump’s descriptions of the purported vandalism grew increasingly vivid, describing the alleged perpetrators like something out of a slasher film. In a TruthSocial post Tuesday, Trump said the 350 foot long gash consisted of numerous slashes which were “made by a very sharp knife or razors.”
“It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition,” the president wrote.
. The ever-expanding gash
The president’s has a penchant for escalating hyperbole, and this weekend the size of the alleged gash in the pool liner grew in size in each retelling of the story. On Saturday evening, Trump claimed the vandals “ put a 250 foot long gash into the beautiful facade of what took so much work, competence, and money to build and complete.” By Monday? It was a 300 foot long gash. By Tuesday, it was 350 feet. Since the reflecting pool is 2,030 feet long, the alleged size of the alleged gash still has a lot of room to grow.
. Paid pro-algae protesters
And then they came for the people in pink frog suits:

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, taking a break from maternity leave to appear on Fox News on Monday, referred to the demonstrators as “deranged leftists in algae costumes with ‘Team Algae’ on their backs.”
Trump and his allies have suggested these agitators are just deranged Democrats, but little is actually known about them. Are they paid by lobbyists from Big Algae, or is this algae advocacy actually a false flag operation by the paid enemies of algae, like the nanobubbler industry?
. The Olympic canoeist
Over the weekend, the president said that the National Park Service had arrested multiple alleged vandals who had targeted the reflecting pool. Among them was David Hearn, a three-time Olympian in the canoe slalom — who says he committed no crime. In an interview with the Washington Post, Hearn said he had stopped by the reflecting pool following a 52-mile bike ride and had reached in to touch a portion of the peeling liner. “I didn’t vandalize anything,” he said. “I didn’t destroy or break or peel anything. By the time I realized what was going on, I was being put in handcuffs.”
Hearn is slated to appear in court on July 9. While it remains to be seen what, if any, penalties he and other so-called vandals will face, Trump has made his stance on the matter clear. “These are very serious crimes having to do with the destruction of National Monuments. Years in jail!,” Trump said on social media.
