Fears new UK rental laws will 'push prices up' in Coventry
Coventry Live readers have mixed views as Labour councillors on Coventry City Council debate the new Renters’ Rights Act, which received Royal Assent last month and will take effect nationwide from May next year. The law aims to give renters more security, stability, and protection, but some councillors argue it does little for landlords.
James Ibbs, manager of the council’s safer housing teams, outlined the key points at this week’s communities and neighbourhoods scrutiny board: ending ‘no fault’ evictions, limiting rent increases to once a year, and banning discrimination against tenants based on benefits or the number of children in a household.
Councillor Gurdev Hayre, a Coventry property owner, raised concerns. “Say one of my family has a job in London but then their job finishes, he will be coming back. If I need that property, what is the procedure if you can’t evict in the first year? It is my house, my property but I can’t give them notice.
