Ahead of the COP 26 climate summit in Glasgow in November, we will be hearing lots from Boris Johnson and his ministers about their supposed green credentials.

However, when it comes to creating jobs and investing in green technology that really benefit the environment and tackle climate change, this Government has fallen short.

The Government’s own body for tracking progress on targets has warned it will miss key goals for cutting emissions and decarbonising the economy.

As Keir Starmer said last week, this Government has failed to live up to its own rhetoric and left a “chasm between soundbites and action”.

This failure is particularly frustrating for the North which has the potential to be at the heart of a green economy that could create tens of thousands of well-paid jobs.

That can only happen if the Government is genuinely committed to creating green jobs.

Yet, this Government has ditched support for onshore wind energy and solar power and dropped critical commitments to deal with the climate crisis.

What makes matters worse is the cost of dealing with climate change will only grow. Delaying investment and the absence of a proper plan to meet the challenges will just increase those costs.
