I mean if Steve Bruce wants to grab a personal lifeline in heavy seas then he has the perfect opportunity.

Should Newcastle win this coming midweek away to Newport County, another side from the bottom division of League Two, they will be through to the quarter-finals of the league cup.

That would leave them only three matches from potentially lifting the rarest of silverware which if it happened would incredibly place Bruce as a trophy winner above many managers of top pedigree in club history.

And just to make things even easier, he would have a breather before taking up the League Cup challenge once again.

What more could you wish for when water is lapping round your neck?

It's a gift from the gods, an open invitation to dream, and would represent the second time in Bruce's short and lucky cup reign that he has been the recipient of kind draws which have resulted in quarter-final appearances.

United took advantage of playing sides from lesser divisions in the FA Cup last season. Now it's the Carabao Cup.

Just think: while the Mags have been treated gently PL clubs like Leicester, Wolves, Sheffield United, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Leeds United, and West Brom are already out.

It's also Liverpool vs Arsenal, Brighton vs Manchester United, Burnley vs Man City, Everton vs West Ham and Chelsea at Spurs next week. All fall down!

Bruce has had an uneasy........
