Editorial: Watch your pocketbook as General Assembly pushes energy bill

1 6 52

Remember when Illinois consumers benefited from honest and efficient oversight of the state’s electric utilities? We don’t, either, and we’re concerned the trend will continue.

After months of wrangling, the Illinois House will reconvene Thursday to consider costly legislation that looks after the interests of unions, environmental lobbyists and the state’s big electric utilities.

The everyday customer, however, could be on the hook for an enormous bill.

The legislation calls for an aggressive cut in carbon emissions from coal plants, which is longoverdue. It also would fund union jobs, bail out struggling nuclear plants that giant utility Exelon would otherwise shutter and reempower the Illinois Commerce Commission.
