Editorial: At least Walgreens took a risk with Theranos

She was young, confident and a hit with the smart money in Silicon Valley. One of Chicago’s biggest companies showered her with millions. Now Elizabeth Holmes is on trial in a high-profile federal fraud case and the Deerfield-based Walgreens will be front and center.

The giant drugstore chain poured $140 million into Theranos, a company built on the false promises of Holmes. It put the startup’s unproven blood-testing equipment into 41 stores (40 in Phoenix and one in Northern California), telling its investors the devices would provide “less invasive and more affordable access to diagnostic lab testing.”

Walgreens’ customers received at least 31,000 test results that turned out to be no good. Some patients were told they were HIV-positive when they weren’t. One patient was told she had miscarried her baby when........
