Op-ed: The ‘war for talent’ among Chicago companies: A survival guide

The national and Chicago job markets are in the grip of an unprecedented “Great Resignation.” A record-high 10.1 million jobs remain unfilled across the country as of this past June. Employers struggle to attract enough workers to fill demand. Workers are hopping jobs, making wholesale career changes and even leaving the workforce entirely in record numbers.

Though the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic resembled the height of the Great Recession and layoffs dominated the headlines, the “Great Resignation” we’re in now is new territory. In fact, according to a July Monster.com survey, a staggering 95% of employees are thinking about quitting their jobs.

In Chicago, our employer partners share war stories of high turnover, positions remaining vacant for long spells and a desperate “war for talent.” In speaking to business executives at the Executives’ Club of Chicago about just this topic, I could feel their frustration with retaining talent and saw countless hands up in the air asking what else can be done to prevent........
