Op-ed: Grubhub has helped Chicago restaurants survive, especially during the pandemic

Grubhub was founded in Chicago in 2004, at 16th Street and Indiana Avenue. Over the past 17 years, we have worked hard, here in Chicago, to build a business with a singular focus — helping restaurants grow profitably.

While many things have changed over the years, our values and priorities have not. From our earliest days spent moving restaurant menus from messy desk drawers to the internet, to the modern food delivery platform that connects hundreds of thousands of diners with local restaurants across the country daily, every day we work hard to help restaurants. Grubhub does not have a viable business unless restaurants thrive.

And since the pandemic began, we’ve worked harder than before to support restaurants. Almost overnight, companies such as Grubhub went from being a source of incremental orders for restaurants to their lifeline. This was a responsibility we have taken seriously. When Chicago and other cities across the country shut down indoor dining at restaurants, we got to work. We changed our business to provide the options and type of support that restaurants, diners and delivery workers need.

And it’s been working. Since the pandemic began, more than 2.2 million diners in Chicago have used Grubhub to find restaurants they had never ordered from. Those diners have generated 16 million........
