Dealing with varicose veins

Varicose veins are dilated, elongated tortuous superficial veins that typically occur in the legs.

They occur in 50% of all middle-aged adults. However, there are four times more common in females than in males. Varicose veins occur more frequently in individuals who must stand or sit motionless for prolonged periods of time.

They can occur anywhere throughout the body. Other symptoms can include muscle fatigue, muscle aches, localized itching, heaviness in legs, bruising or bluish discolouration of veins involved and leg swelling and edema. Complications include ulceration, blood pooling or stasis and phlebitis, or the occurrence of blood clots inside the dilated veins.

Stasis dermatitis is a common, recalcitrant condition of the lower legs where blood pooling occurs leading to inflammation, redness and swelling. Skin ulceration can occur, which can lead to infection and cellulitis.

Veins are a type of blood vessel that generally takes blood from extremities and different parts of the body back to the heart. Veins are typically less fibrous and muscular than arteries which take blood away from the heart to the extremities. Veins are under less force and........
