But it could be a resetting of a clock that has now been running for 17 years and then some.

An ambitious $10 million federal government-commissioned masterplan considers a 214-hectare parcel of land in Bruce, which would link the North Canberra Hospital, CIT, a stadium and the AIS campus in a multipurpose hub.

The plan includes the prospect of future light rail extensions to Belconnen, new transport corridors, multi-level car parks and new homes for residents with restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as a Gungahlin Drive Extension off-ramp for access to the new precinct.

This could be a neat - if sprawling - solution to funding two troublesome pieces of sporting infrastructure.

The AIS needs urgent upgrades as we head towards the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.

And the stadium? This could well be the answer we've been looking for, or at least a cause for cautious optimism for anyone remotely invested in a large and versatile sporting facility that could bring regular crowds from both the city and the region.
