Advancing the cause of women - via their bank accounts

In hotel ballrooms and cavernous conference venues around Australia on Friday, alpha females will gather – lipstick on, and high heels clacking – to celebrate International Women's Day.

Champagne will be poured and motivational speeches delivered by impeccably-groomed female corporate trailblazers. Smiles will be plastered, almost as thick as the foundation and perfume, as women gather to be instructed on how to take over the world.

Well, that’s as I imagine it, anyway. Despite almost 15 years in finance journalism, I’ve never once been invited – that I can remember – to an IWD event. In the field of finance, gender stereotypes still abound.

Women with an interest in finance must be either "money mavens" or "business chicks". We're all power shoulders, Prada handbags and Louboutin shoes.

But give me sneakers and a $5 Kmart t-shirt any day.

As women, we’re accustomed to striving for unachievable ideals – beauty being the most deeply ingrained; career and money success being another.

Women can pursue power, but many will do better tackling their finances - in sensible........
