Going to the polls: what a chore it is

The wait to find out what May day the federal election is to be held is over.

May 18 will be the day we must grumblingly slouch forth to vote for (ugh!) politicians, those talentless members of that most despised of professions. Voting! What a chore it is, my fellow Australians.

But wait, disgruntled, democracy-jaded Australians! Another Australian opportunity to vote in May has opened. And this time the candidates are cultured men and women of proven genius.

And what giants this election's strong, silent candidates are, dwarfing the small, gibbering, party-political pygmies who are noisily clamouring for our votes in May's parliamentary elections. What is this Poll from Heaven I am rhapsodising about? Yes, it is ABC Classic FM's annual Top 100 vote, with voting closing on May 20.

The date is eerily close to the day on which the lumpy Australian lumpenproletariat will choose a government and a prime minister. Meanwhile, though, the boutique electorate of ABC Classic FM will be engaged in the far more profound democratic activity of selecting/electing Australia's favourite classical music composer.

While the weary masses vote grudgingly for........
