Public dominance displays by 'recreational rioters' have become the latest unwelcome intrusion into public spaces. From the nation's capital to Florida spring break, social media-mobilized youth mobs attack business districts.

Pity. Empathy. Misplaced sympathy have seen their day

'Street takeovers' are simply riots by another name. The fact that they're recreational ones is beside the point. They should be quelled with tear gas, massive police and National Guard response, federal prosecution and downtown deployment of tactical security teams usually hired to secure rowdy labor disputes. It's become too commonplace to dismiss this chaos as 'one-offs'. What you have are displays of public dominance. The only way to stop them is by displaying greater public dominance.

Pity. Empathy. Misplaced sympathy have seen their day. Weak leadership at local levels must react strongly instead of retreating until intrusions are over. It's never over, especially when weather warms.
