We're used to folks delivering people, food and packages as drivers for popular apps. Tragically, this leads to truly heinous deaths and injuries as criminals target these workers.
I recall when a late 20th century spate of fatal carjackings prompted passage of original legislation on October 25th, 1992 to address this threat. US representative Barry Moore (R-Alabama) recently proposed a 'Federal Carjacking Enforcement Act' on November 19th, 2025, to further combat it.
Of particular concern to me as someone who's ridden volunteer safety escorts for female rideshare drivers is how violent criminals book phony rides to ambush them.
Or lurk around neighborhoods and businesses hoping to catch a driver off guard.

I propose an enhancement to existing federal carjacking statutes. Its working name is the 'Rideshare Driver Enhancement, or RIDE Act'. It imposes mandatory life imprisonment for committing this crime where drivers survive. In instances of murder or sexual assault, capital punishment would be the penalty. Immunity would automatically be conferred upon drivers who defend themselves in addition to civilian rescuers.
Restaurant and other employees doing deliveries ordered by app or phone would also be covered by this enhancement. Too many pizza delivery drivers have been ambushed due to phony orders.

Rideshare drivers are being ambushed via a federally regulated communications medium, and on roads that get federal funding. It clearly rises to requiring a national set of penalties.
Carjacking rideshare workers is equivalent to pirates on the high seas and rash of post-Civil War 'highwaymen' who robbed stagecoaches, trains and mounted mail carriers.
