My 'Gen X' boyhood -and adulthood-has scenes of cinematic conflict illustrating it. One of the most memorable was the fiery demise of Nazi Panzer tank commander 'Colonel Hessler' (Robert Shaw) in 1965's 'Battle of the Bulge' drama starring Henry Fonda:

Followed by John Wayne's 1968 Vietnam war epic, 'The Green Berets.' However one felt about that war, any action fan would agree the slain 'Kolwalski' character went out like a soldier. See for yourself:

Fun fact: The actor in that jungle scene went on to portray 'Junior' in Burt Reynolds' 'Smokey and the Bandit' movies, starting in 1977.

I grew up watching reruns of the 'Batman' television series which debuted in 1966, starring Adam West and Burt Ward. Out of countless fights was the historic crossover brawl between the 'Dynamic Duo' and 'the Green Hornet and Kato'. Van Williams played the emerald crime fighter and martial arts legend Bruce Lee immortalized his partner:

Another standout cut was from 1980's 'Superman II', where the 'Man of Steel' took on a trio of super-criminals from his homeworld who threw everything they had at him, including a city bus!:

The next favorite fight scene is from the director's cut of a superhero movie I once described as 'the world as it looks through my eyes'. From 2009's 'Watchmen' movie comes the heroic last stand of that world's second costumed adventurer, Hollis Mason, the original 'Nite Owl':

From that same movie is a fun fracas behind bars involving the second 'Nite Owl' and 'Silk Spectre' who came out of retirement to break their vigilante buddy 'Rorschach' out of prison:

I've often described it as the perfect double date for masked avengers.

A particular favorite is fast-paced fisticuffs between protagonists Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in a 2000 big screen remake of the 'Charlies Angels' TV series (1976-1981). In the film they squared off against 'the Thin Man':

Closing out volume one of my favorite fight scenes is the re-imagined Battle of Thermopylae in the 2006 movie, '300', where Gerard Butler as Leonidas held off Persian emperor Xerxes' huge army to the last man:
