Two things I resolved to do in 2008 when I created my 'Cap Black' umbrella name covering various advocacy was: 'create safety' (advocate and consult with stakeholders) and 'share supply' (offer food and other support when possible).
The former is easier than the latter due to resource acquisition problems.
As a 'recovering grouch', I promise you this isn't 'Pollyanna' wishing upon a star. It's pragmatic
My 'Cap Black' outreach began in the housing bubble bursting crisis during the George W. Bush administration. Beginning in my hometown, it came with me after moving. I led or participated in marches as a parade marshal and was volunteer security coordinator for the local 'Occupy New York' branch in its last weeks. Its camp across from city hall was shut down by the 'limo liberal' mayor at that time working with federal agencies. Sadly, most homeless Black men in its ranks are still unhoused and unemployed to this day. So-called 'progress' overlooks us.
It was during this bleak time that I first saw widespread homelessness. And also saw a need to do something about it. I'm not a fan of watching people implode in plain sight.
While mentioning various presidents for chronological purposes, let me add this umbrella term I coined isn't overtly partisan. It's not 'Cap Black Conservative' nor 'Cap Black Leftist'. Or even 'Cap Black Libertarian or Cap Black Green Party'. People with whom I 'create safety' or 'share supply' cover the political spectrum. While I'm very opinionated, my opinion takes a distant back seat to what can be created or shared without arguments. As a 'recovering grouch', I promise you this isn't 'Pollyanna' wishing upon a star. It's pragmatic. Simply put, time spent arguing ideology detracts from making mutual protection and preservation a reality.
Through the Obama years I helped folks where I could and eventually embedded my 'Cap Black' concept at a community center-style building. Embedding with a specific set of stakeholders was always a long-term goal. The building is misled by a corporate liberal 'steal estate' executive whose liberalism allowed violent kids and other intruders to overrun it. I put a stop to these intrusions with consistent 'creation of safety' instead of making excuses. I mobilized its businesses, patrons, neighbors and police district to change not holding people accountable instead of making excuses.

This lasted until zenith of the pandemic when I was fired in April, 2020 by a crooked now-former executive director terminated last year for embezzlement. Despite its failed oversight, most people I met through that building are pretty good folks. Many of my professional and outreach opportunities still come from contacts made there. When they come along. Which are few and far between these days.
Between the first Trump administration and the Biden years I began my 'Borrow A Brother' volunteer safety escorts for female friends. It started as a response to rampant carjacking. I rode with ladies I know while they made nightly deliveries for popular apps, nocturnal post office box visits and after hours ATM cash deposits which of course I advised against. None could afford hiring an executive protection agent or bodyguard. All deserved backup while out after sundown.
I joke and put as a tagline beneath some online posts that most of what I do is 'free but please don't tell hardcore capitalist friends'. Incidentally, I didn't take a vow of poverty in case anyone is wondering. It's just that most folks needing personal security or home health aides can't afford them. This is a Generation X-sized hole which must be filled as we mature. It's in that vein that since October, 2025, I was a long-term volunteer safety escort for someone who had knee replacement surgery among other challenges. I helped her get around, made sure packages weren't stolen off of her porch, fed and walked her dogs and did administrative matters. It was another example of embedding or allying the 'Cap Black' concept for a specific purpose
This has been a quick retrospective of my outreach. Let's see what the future holds.
