As of this posting, the Austin, Texas mass shooting is being investigated by the FBI as a terrorist act. Clearly, it was what I call an 'act of war' on the public, regardless of motivation.

My grave concern has always been that bars and restaurants' are the softest targets among a 'soft underbelly' of targeted public spaces.

My first 2026 post fleshed out this concern locally:

Bars are an under-addressed front for countering terrorism and active shooters who aren't politically motivated.

Their owners, as a class however, are largely disinterested in either serious security threat.

Bar security professionals, city authorities and federal partners would be well-served hardening 'soft underbelly' of alcoholic beverage outlets and large scale gatherings.

The spring event season is just around the corner, with national St. Patrick's Day celebrations alone joining significant big events to be secured during new wartime.
