Bell: Calgary neighbourhood faces meth madness

4 69 654

Build it and they will come.

But when many of those coming go under the heading of scumbag we have ourselves a problem.

I live a few blocks away from the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre so the scathing report from the cops comes as no surprise.

In the neighbourhood, many people see the area around Sheldon Chumir’s safe injection site as not safe for them, crawling with criminals, a real pain in the butt and sometimes downright scary.

We hear explanations.

How the safe injection site was for opioid users and the taxpayer-funded shooting gallery saves lives and research showed there wouldn’t be more crime.

How meth use has gone way up and the authorities weren’t ready for the meth crisis and the meth crowd can be nasty.

How some addicts can’t wait to get into the injection site so they do their deed outside.

Or how others can’t smoke their meth at the site but come down anyway because they know if they’re nearby they’ll be helped if they overdose.

But even those in the tolerant Beltline don’t want to be played for fools. We do not want to become the city’s toilet.
