Bell: Calgary city hall's budget and attitude stink

You know city hall’s Cowtown Kremlin hasn’t changed when you see the city’s four-year budget and it’s got four years of tax hikes.

Four years where the city’s day-to-day operating budget keeps going up and up.

Four years where the full-time positions will increase by 642.5 employees.

Four years where, at the end of those four years, you’ll be paying almost $300 more than you do now, if you own a so-called typical home.

That won’t include still-higher taxes you might have to pay since somebody has to cover the tab now that the downtown has so many empty offices.

And we’re not even talking about the millions councillors want to add to the budget because they’ve figured out yet another way to spend money.

“How can you call this an austerity budget?” says Jeromy Farkas, the councillor who is a royal pain in the butt to the city hall establishment.

“Maybe it’s an austerity budget because it drives Calgarians into austerity. There’s no austerity at city hall.”

And when Farkas says he’d like city brass to tell council what a 5% spending cut in 2019 would........
