Bell: Alberta, the party's over with no leader at the helm

9 14 393

You know we’re in trouble when the press release has the words grim and bleak in the title, in bold print so you can’t miss it.

You know we’re in trouble when we have a three-ring circus being run by Trudeau, Notley and Nenshi.

With all this as our sad state of affairs, newshounds come to see Trevor Tombe, the pull-no-punches Calgary economist who insists he doesn’t pick political sides.

Tombe is the guy who works with the numbers and gave us the straight goods on all that Olympic bid baloney about the Games being able to turn around the Calgary economy.

The man is not in the business of sugar-coating reality just so we can feel all warm and cuddly as we head for the brick wall.

His point is made, like a punch to the gut. The party’s over.

“The best time to get off a roller coaster is when it’s at the bottom,” says Tombe.

And Alberta’s roller coaster is pretty near the bottom. The oilpatch can’t pay for a party of big spending as they have in the past. The oil price is in the toilet. You can pretend for a time but not forever.

We are walking distance........
