Breakenridge: UCP at a loss when not battling Trudeau's Liberals

Lost amid last week’s frenzy surrounding the imploding federal Liberal government was a significant policy reversal from Ottawa — one that represents a major win for Alberta.

The day after the federal finance minister’s shock resignation, word came that Ottawa was backing down from its original timeline for a net-zero emissions grid. Alberta had always insisted that 2050 was much more reasonable and feasible than 2035 and, suddenly, Ottawa is in agreement.

Now, federal governments don’t come any more lame duck than this one, and so it’s hard to take them seriously when it comes to any future policy targets, especially those that are years away. The Clean Electricity Regulations (CER) along with the oil and gas emissions cap and the 2035 zero-emissions vehicle target all seem dead in the water.
