Breakenridge: Province should resist banning flavoured vaping products
The Alberta government is under increasing pressure to consider a policy that the federal government is already poised to implement. But rather than emulating or acquiescing to Ottawa’s plans, the Alberta government should be preparing to vigorously oppose all of this.
This all concerns the question of whether flavoured vaping products need to be under further restrictions or banned altogether. The federal government promised in 2021 to implement such a ban but has not yet followed through. In the meantime, Quebec has implemented its own ban, as have P.E.I., Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Last week, the group Stop Addicting Adolescents to Vaping and E-cigarettes (SAAVE) held a press conference to demand the Alberta government follow Quebec’s lead and ban all vaping flavours other than tobacco. They also released the results of their attempts to gauge the views of all of Alberta’s MLAs on this issue.
