Breakenridge: An early election would draw focus away from crucial pipeline work

The sudden resignation of a prominent cabinet minister has only added to the growing cloud of uncertainty hanging over Alberta politics as 2026 commences.

Whether Rebecca Schulz’s political exit is further evidence of an impending election remains to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine that it’s completely disconnected from the current climate.

We’re still more than a year and a half away from the next scheduled provincial election. However, with various ballot measures stacking up — not to mention a looming bad news budget and auditor general’s report — an early election call offers a lot of strategic appeal to the UCP.
