Bell: Testing out 120 km/h speed limit for Alberta divided roads starts Wednesday
They didn’t think it would take this long.
The UCP government promised us they would try out a higher speed limit on a section of divided highway in Alberta once the snow stopped.
You see, the Danielle Smith government wants to raise the speed limit on Alberta divided highways from 110 km/h to 120 km/h, but they have to test out the change first and do a so-called pilot project.
So now Devin Dreeshen, the province’s head honcho of the highways, says the test drive will begin this week, likely Wednesday, and go on throughout the summer.

The test drive will be on a 22-kilometre stretch of Highway 2 south of Leduc, which is just south of Edmonton.
The government picked this patch of pavement because this route has almost perfectly placed overpasses where you can set up speed sensors and monitors to get an idea of how drivers act with the speed limit at 120 km/h instead of 110 km/h.
You get what Dreeshen calls “a tremendous amount of data points” to see how upping the speed limit affects the behaviour of drivers.
