On the Road: Crystals of the cold

Ya know, I think this might be the prettiest picture of a feedlot I’ve ever taken.

There was a gorgeous prismatic cloud sitting almost directly over the grain bins and livestock pens that complemented the soft blues of the snowy landscape around it and gave the whole scene a soft look. True, I could hear the sounds of cattle and rumbling trucks and machinery and, being downwind, feel the olfactory effects.

But overall, yeah, it was, I dunno, lovely.

I’d gotten a pretty late start on the day. My right front wheel was shaking like a cold dog every time I tried to drive over 90 km/h so I asked mechanic Bruce — such a great guy — to have a look at it. Turned out it needed rebalancing and a bunch of ice and muck removed but he got me going quite quickly.

Thank you, sir!

So I ended up hitting the road by 10 a.m., not a bad time to get going in the warmer months but just a little late at this time of year. The day was bright and sunny, though, so I headed southeast to see what I could see.

And what I could see turned out to be fog.

I hit it first right around Indus, just a little east of the city limits, It wasn’t too heavy there, just a low-lying blanket that softened the sunlight shining through. But it must have been around for most of the night judging by all the frost.

I am such a sucker for frost, especially on a bright day. The way it sparkles and shimmers and kicks the light into its primary colours as the sun shines through the crystals absolutely fascinates me.

Around Indus and Dalemead it coated everything from the tallest poplars to the lowest grass and as the fog receded it revealed more and more of the white landscape around it. Closer to Carseland it thinned to a blue haze that dulled what few colours there........
