Opinion: Alberta's new gender rules sink one woman's participation in swim club

I belong to a masters (adult) swim club in Calgary. When people hear that, they are sometimes impressed, imagining a highly competitive group with a serious training regime.

For myself, and indeed for many swimmers in my club, nothing could be further from the truth. I am a distinctly mediocre swimmer, and I don’t care. I belong to the club for reasons of fun, physical activity and community.

Yet, being part of a masters swim club, we are subject to rules imposed by the sport’s governing bodies, Swim Canada and Swim Alberta. We are prompted each year, as members, to renew our registration. I have diligently done this every year since I first joined nearly 10 years ago.
