Martin: Premier off-base in vilifying the judiciary

Checks and balances. Those three words succinctly define democracy.

Governments in democratic societies consist of three branches: executive, legislative and judicial.

Each wield their power and authority independently of the others, ensuring a fair and functioning society.

This week, the chief judge of the three levels of court in Alberta took the rare step of issuing a public statement which basically said just that.

According to a court spokesperson, the statement was strictly educational and designed to address public misconception about the role of the judiciary and the relationship of the courts with the other two branches of government.
