Braid: Donald Trump hands Trudeau a crisis he could use to win another election

President-elect Donald Trump routinely upends U.S. politics with a tweet. Now he’s done it to Canada, with his threat to slam 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods.

Politically, who wins from this? Maybe Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump has handed Trudeau his comeback chance. The PM might elude electoral disaster if he can spike these tariffs before Trump is sworn in Jan. 20.

Trudeau has been awful on so many fronts that he doesn’t deserve another shot. Not many minds will change in Alberta, Saskatchewan or much of B.C. But a tariff win would earn him credit in key parts of the country.
