Nelson: Calgary's city council neuters itself in record time |
Most governments aim to accomplish a great deal in their first 100 days, before inertia sets in. But few manage to turn themselves into lame ducks as effectively as Calgary city council did on Tuesday.
It must be a political record — rendering all those fine words and valiant promises made to voters just a few short months ago into dust so quickly. Remember all that talk about change and accountability? Forget it — meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Maybe we shouldn’t have got our hopes up. But after what Calgarians put up with during the tenure of the previous council, is it any wonder we collectively hoped for better from this new bunch, especially considering the large number of fresh faces it contained? Hope springs eternal.
