Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings, has two faces and January is named after him.

According to lore, he protected thresholds and kept out evil spirits. Under such circumstances, calling someone two-faced shouldn’t be an insult.

One could ask where Janus was in 2025 as evil spirits crossed the country’s threshold and wreaked havoc, but that’s irrelevant. The only upside to the discord in Canada last year is that it brought us a new resolve — and a new leader.

Every new year brings a moment of reflection. What is not common is to find the musings of nearly 15 years ago appropriate today.
