Senate debates labor reform following widespread LLA negotiations

Senators are debating the government’s labor reform bill in a session that began on Wednesday at 11 a.m.  Incidents between demonstrators and the police were reported around Congress during the afternoon.

Numerous groups that oppose the reform marched and rallied around Congress to protest the reform. Police shot tear gas canisters and rubber bullets and used water cannons to disperse demonstrators. Some of them threw Molotov cocktails and stones at the police.

Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva warned that demonstrations must be peaceful and added that the security forces would intervene “in the event of any unusual incident.” And added in an X post: “We will not allow the usual violent elements to sow chaos and disorder.”

Metropolitan Police informed that 13 protestors were arrested and “at least” 40 were detained for background check.

The session is scheduled to last until early Thursday, as a slew of lawmakers have signed up to speak amid heavy scrutiny, with unions protesting and major business sectors largely backing the initiative.
