PlayStation 5 features 8K output, solid state drive, PS4 compatibility

The first official details of Sony's next-generation gaming machine have been revealed, with the next PlayStation set to pack a whole lot of power, unprecedented speed and support for upcoming 8K televisions.

The details come from system architect Mark Cerny — who is also a game developer and previously architected the PlayStation 4 — who sat down with Wired to drop a handful of tantalising titbits about the new hardware.

While he leaves a lot of questions still on the table (he wouldn't even confirm the machine will be called "PlayStation 5", though it surely will be, but said it would not be released in 2019), Cerny was happy to divulge one very welcome upgrade; the new console will feature a solid state drive instead of an old fashioned hard disk.

It might not sound sexy, but a high-end custom SSD could mean the near-elimination of........
