Google's idea for 'the future of gaming' is coming. But what is it?

The three most prominent gaming platforms have been held by the same three companies since Sega toppled itself in 1999. But shifting technology presents an opportunity for new challengers to muscle in on Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo's turf. Google is going to try.

This week the search giant is holding a keynote at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco — its first ever keynote at the show — during which it promises to reveal "the future of gaming". And while we don't know exactly what it's going to show, all indications would suggest it's more significant than the dabbling exhibited previously by Apple and Amazon.

First of all, Google has just finished beta testing its imaginatively titled "Project Stream"; technology that runs a video game on very powerful servers and streams the video and sound to a player, while receiving button inputs back from the player near instantly. This is fairly accepted to be the (eventual) future of video games, as it means you can always access the most cutting edge games wherever you are, on any device, as long as the network infrastructure is........
