Twilight Grand Final completely missed the point

Hallelujah. The fans are victorious.

The AFL has confirmed the Grand Final will remain in its traditional afternoon timeslot this year, resisting the temptation to move it to a twilight fixture.

When the AFL floated the idea of a twilight Grand Final, the fans stomped their feet and demanded the head honchos from AFL HQ leave the game alone. Polls published by media organisations showed about 70 per cent wanted the game to stay as a daytime fixture.

For many onlookers who are not emotionally tied to an AFL team or, more importantly, to the game of Australian Rules football, the carry on about it might have seemed over the top. After all, when you consider the AFL was considering moving the game’s starting time by no more than two hours, you might think the debate seemed rather trivial.

But it’s not. In fact, it goes to the very heart of what makes Australian........
