Drugs in sport: with great influence comes great responsibility

So former St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt reckons illicit drug use in the AFL is “out of control”.

Speaking on SEN radio this week, he took aim at both the players and the current AFL illicit drugs policy. “The vast majority of players don’t have abuse issues, they’re just taking the piss out of the system,” he said.

He then added, “There’s no recourse; there’s no ramifications, so it’s a free-for-all in the off-season.”

Clearly Riewoldt expects more of the players, as we all should. In fact, he lobbied for a tougher stance when he was playing.

But former Collingwood superstar Dane Swan thinks everyone involved with the AFL should be held to the same standards as the players.

“I think everyone in the AFL should be tested … not just the players, all the admin, all the people at AFL HQ,” he said on his podcast.
