Oh, the irony of it all.

When challenged about his brattish attitude and underperforming career, Australian tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic once gloated to reporters, "I just count money, that's all I do. I count my millions."

Tomic reckons he can swan into some of the biggest, most esteemed tournaments in the world, turn up his toes and take home more money than many earn in a whole year.

Well, not this time, Bernie.

After another subpar effort in his first-round match against Frenchman Jo Wilfred Tsonga, which lasted just 58 minutes, Tomic was fined by Wimbledon officials, 100 per cent of his £45,000 ($81,000) prizemoney.

The official line is that he "didn't meet the professional standard" expected in his Wimbledon loss. In other words, he didn't have a go.

So, if Tomic is still planning to count his money, it won't take long to get to zero.

Tomic's defeat was the shortest match at Wimbledon since 2004. His opponent, Tsonga, thinks the penalty is too harsh and believed fining Tomic devalued his win.
