So Israel Folau is challenging the right of Rugby Australia to terminate his contract?

Of course he is. After all, how dare Rugby Australia terminate his annual million-dollar contract despite him – TWICE now – alienating just about the entire rugby community globally, the gay community, his teammates, his coach, the administrators, the game’s sponsors, and the majority of the Australian public? All when he legally committed himself last year to do no such thing, and personally promised to not put Australian rugby through it again, before signing his four-year contract? I mean, why can't he just keep getting a million dollars a year from his employer, while comporting himself in a manner that will cost them many millions? Why are they so damn tetchy about it all?

In a situation that is already overwrought, I don’t want to add to it, much, by being unkind. But Folau’s position, in my view, is entirely untenable and ...

And wait!

If you cock your ear to the west, you can right now hear the thundering of keyboards, as columnist after columnist, shock jock after shock jock form up thundering rants about how this whole thing is a matter of freedom of speech, and religious freedom.

Oh yes. Despite the demonstrable damage done by Folau last year by putting up homophobic posts – and if saying gays are going to burn in hell isn’t homophobic, pray tell, what does it take? – their genuine........
